Repent and be Revived

Hezekiah was a different man from everyone else, especially different from his father, Ahaz – a wicked king. Hezekiah started from his first day to reignite the worship of the True God. He called upon God’s ministers to start the process of consecrating themselves and the holy places of God.
Quickly, they got to work and began sanctifying the house of God for worship. By the end of the month, the order of worship was active in the temple. This prompted Hezekiah to call for national repentance and commitment to the LORD through a special Passover celebration.  Confession, Contrition, and Consecration.   And the people responded because God had prepared hearts in His people to seek Him. Revival was afire.

God Thinks About You

If our thoughts that we think shape our life, what kind of thoughts are you thinking? Have you thought about your thoughts? Do you think someone else is thinking of you? God is thinking of you. And David began thinking about what God thinks of him and the product of that thinking is Psalm 139. Let’s think about what God thinks of you.

Repent to Worship

This little psalm flows out of a spiritual disaster for David and all Israel. But you need not to have murdered someone to utilize and value this gem of a prayer to the LORD. This psalm guides us in how to confess our sin and ask for restoration from God toward worship of His greatness.
For background, read 2 Samuel 11-12. And for follow-up, read Psalm 32.

The Compassionate Shepherd

We probably don’t know much about shepherds like folks did in David’s day. But someone who cares for helpless animals by protecting, nurturing, and tending their needs is what David is telling us and more. Let’s see how the illustration of a shepherd with sheep is helpful for us to learn about how God cares for us through Christ Jesus, our Lord.

His Name is Wonderful

The LORD sent Isaiah with a message of repentance and a reminder that God would keep His promises. And the big promise was that the Messiah would still descend from David to defeat the serpent and establish a better kingdom. Isaiah 7:14 is the start of this section and in culminates here with the fourfold double description of the Messiah to be born of the virgin. We have reason to celebrate!

The Place for His Presence

Following the spiritual disaster with the golden calf idol, Moses successfully intercedes for the nation to still have the presence of God in their midst. They chose the presence of God over the promised land without Him. Yet there was still the task of preparing a place for God’s presence to be with them, according to His specifications. The focus shifts to the nation as a whole in giving and Spirit empowered craftsmen (men and women) to obey the LORD’s instructions to build the tabernacle.

Necessary for Obedience

Jesus beautifully illustrated the command to love one’s neighbor with the story of the Good Samaritan, where someone who had no reason to show compassion to a hurting person went above and beyond to help.  But how can one have that kind of love for another?  The following episode that Luke reports shows that Jesus answers that question for Mary and Martha.  The most needful thing is to sit at the feet of Jesus to learn of His love.

More than a Name

The LORD descends to the mountain to proclaim His Name, to declare His character, for Moses and the children of Israel for all generations of those who love the LORD. We do well to meditate upon these verses and the character traits revealed here.

Greater Intimacy with God

Moses has interceded in behalf of the idolatrous Israelites that God would not disown them. Desiring God to continue to be present with them in the journey ahead, Moses asks to see the glorious presence of God. The glory Moses experiences is not what he asked, but is so instructive for him and us. He experiences greater intimacy with the LORD than possibly anyone before Him had known.

An Idol or the Intercessor

It is ironic but hopefully no surprise that the very stories designed to warn us against making idols are often most likely to tempt us modern people to make idols. Why? Because they reveal God to not be what we expect God to be. Thus we want to think of our God to be more like we prefer Him to be, rather than what He reveals. I hope that a second look at this Spirit-inspired story will help us see the warning and more important, see the the LORD for who He really is.
