God’s Light

God created light and then created beings to show a physical light. His image bearers failed to live in His spiritual light. So He sent His Son to be spiritual Light and give spiritual light to those who believe in Him. They become His lights to show His Spiritual light in a dark world. And one day, God will once again combine the physical light and spiritual light to eradicate darkness once and for all from His creation.

God is Good

The prophet asked the LORD what He would do about the wickedness in the nation. The LORD’s answer prompted more questions for Habakkuk. But the LORD reassured His prophet that one day, judgment would come for all those who persist in wickedness and that only through living by faith would any escape condemnation. But when hard times come, will we still trust the LORD? Will we still say “God is good” when the blessings are not evident?

Be Surrendered to God

There is something admirable in fighting against insurmountable odds unless of course that person is fighting against God Almighty.  So we wonder why people would choose to lose.  But the Canaanites of Gibeon broke ranks with the rest of their Canaanites and decided to surrender to the LORD, God Most High.  They would rather be slaves of the LORD than perish eternally.  And the LORD honors them by adding them to His own protected people.

Rescue from Jericho

The children of Israel are learning how to experience victory in the LORD. Being in right relationship with Him, following His directions for life and warfare, and keeping Him in His right place as leader and in their midst. And as they do, they discover that the LORD uses them to rescue more of His people from the midst of Canaanite Jericho. By the mercy of the LORD, He rescues Rahab and her family from His judgment.

Good News of Resurrection

The good news is that Jesus the Messiah died for our sins, just as was foretold in Scriptures. He was buried and then He rose from the dead, as was foretold in Scriptures. And we receive the benefit by asking and trusting that Jesus did enough to save us from all our sins. He said He did. So we can trust that He did. The resurrection proves He was right.

Be Faithful

Joshua secretly sent two spies into Canaan. He didn’t know it but God sent them for a more important reason than recon. God knew that Rahab believed in Him and He gave her opportunity to demonstrate her faith in a dramatic way. And thus delivered her into the congregation of the people of God, heroes of faith.

Epistle to Exiles

Peter writes to the scattered and persecuted Christians to encourage them. And he starts by praising God for our salvation as planned before time by the Father, accomplished by the Son, and applied to individuals by the Holy Spirit. And they are kept secure for their inheritance in eternity. Praise God, indeed!

Baptism Proclaims

John started baptizing people who confessed their sinful condition and desired to be made right with God (repentance). The dip in the water symbolized the washing of their sins and trust in the “One to come” who was greater than John. This greater One would baptize people in the Holy Spirit, but the physical symbol Jesus taught His apostles was to baptize people in water who had by faith been baptized into the Holy Spirit. Plus their dip under the water also symbolized their faith in the One who had died, been buried, and rose again to new life.

The Judge Speaks

While continuing our tour of the closing chapters of John’s Gospel, we supplement our picture of the crucifixion with Luke’s account of the Gospel story. Having been condemned, the Judge of all the earth gives four sayings of judgment that we would be wise to hear. Words of warning, words of mercy, and words of vindication. This is Part One of Two.

One Man’s Death

The chief priests and religious authorities were intent on keeping power and were opposed to Jesus. And one of the leaders accidentally prophesied the truth of what Jesus came to do. We now understand that it is better that Jesus died for all the people than for all those people to perish, entering eternity without Jesus.
