Unity in Love

Jesus prays that His disciples and their disciples would be unified by His Spirit in them and that unity would create a visible unity among His people through humility, love for one another (John 13:34-35), and serving one another through the Spirit. And Paul echoes that teaching in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Galatians 3:28, Ephesians 4:1-6ff, and Philippians 2:1-4. Others will see that kind of loving unity and they will know that God has been at work. And we are practicing for eternity, Jesus prays that we will be with Him forever in glory.

Advocate and Ally

A word study. John 14:15-18, John 14:25-27, John 15:26-27, John 16:7-15, and 1 John 2:1-2. These passages all help us understand a word in the original Greek of John’s day that we struggle to translate today. But more importantly, this word study helps us understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives today.

More Reasons for Peace

Jesus warns His apostles that trouble is coming that would squeeze the life out of them and try to make them fall away. And that He would not be physically with them as these troubles came. But in His warning, He also gives reasons for hope. They won’t be alone just the same as He wasn’t really alone when His followers fled. Through the Holy Spirit who would indwell them after Jesus departed, they would be equipped to not only can they survive, but they can overcome because Christ overcame through the Spirit. Not only do they have reasons for peace, but Christ gives them joy to the full.

A Good and Perfect Rule

The rule of sin is broken by Christ as He bodily defeated the temptations of sin and He defeats sin in our body through His Spirit. Christ fulfilled righteousness bodily so that He can bring righteousness in our body through His Spirit.  How does He do that?  By putting to death the sinful temptations and being living sacrifices that are holy and acceptable to God, the good and perfect will of God.

Rule of the Spirit

Paul gives a personal glimpse of the struggles he felt between his old way of living (the rule of sin) and his new life in Christ (rule of Spirit). There were daily defeats but the war is already won in Christ. And so it is with us who are in Christ.

Prince of Peace is Lord

If we have peace with God from being reconciled through Christ, we can experience the peace of God from living in the Spirit of God. With the Spirit of God within us, we can experience peace within the body of Christ. No longer just peacekeepers, but we are to be peace-makers – loving one another in concrete ways of grace, mercy, forgiveness, submission, and honor. It radically changes how we live and how we selflessly interact with the world today in light of our eternal home in Christ.

Greater than Moses

Moses is kinda a big deal. God Himself called Moses a faithful servant and called him a friend that God spoke to face to face. When everyone else shrank away in fear, Moses answered the call of God to come into the fire to come closer to God. Could anyone ever measure up to being a prophet like Moses? God said there would be. Only the Messiah Himself could measure up and exceed the standard set by Moses. Let’s see a few ways that’s possible.

Living Transformed

Living Transformed

The Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul gives impossible commands that are beyond what is humanly possible for us fallen creatures to obey.  But God doesn’t just command the impossible.  He gives us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us and to transform us more into the image of the perfect Man, Jesus Christ.  Thus this teaching begins with instructions to be filled with the Spirit to walk in obedience with Him.  Then our lives will be different and the hope of the gospel will be revealed.

Our missionary to the University of Arkansas campus, Stuart Estes, was with us today to share about our college ministry and preach the Word of God to us.

Fruit of Holy Spirit

In contrast to the works of the sinful fleshly nature, abiding in Christ through walking in the Spirit produces fruit that is consistent with God’s character and modeled by Christ. We choose whether to crucify the old nature and walk in the Spirit, but it is the Holy Spirit that produces the fruit.

Liberty to Love

The apostle Paul has concluded his defense of the gospel. Christ has set us free from the regulations of the Law from Sinai. He does not want the Galatian believers putting themselves under bondage to those laws at the expense of grace. Yet he also does not want them using their liberty to indulge sinful desires either. Rather, this liberty is given so that we may be like Christ and love others. Love fulfills the law of Christ.
