Greatest Command

Ancient Landmark series covers three in this one dialogue Jesus had with a wise scribe of the law. What is the greatest commandment? Jesus gives us more than we ask. He repeats an ancient landmark of His day and another law of God. Will we hear the words of the Teacher?

More than a Name

At the end of a particularly hurtful episode where the children of Israel betray the LORD and yet He forgives them, the LORD defines His character for Moses. The LORD is a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in covenant love and faithfulness…

Ten Commands – Part 3

The LORD spoke from the mountain these ten commands of His covenant with Israel but they have been taught much longer and wider than there. Jesus expounded them in His gospel of the kingdom (Sermon on the Mount). The apostles taught them and applied them to new Christians regardless of their ethnicity and culture. These are the timeless guidelines for honoring God by honoring His image in humanity.

Ten Commands

Spoken by God from Mount Sinai, these Ten Commands form the basis of the covenant between God and Israel. And they create a well-known framework for all of us to live by. But do we know these as well as we think we do? This is the first part of our tour through these iconic laws as a part of our ancient landmarks series.

Choice of faith

Moses was pointed in direction of faith by his birth parents and their faith. His adoptive family gave him much but when the time came, he knew that Egypt did not offer him eternal life. By reasoned faith, Moses chose to pursue long-term gain and reward even if it cost him short-term pain and loss. He looked to the reward over following fear. And his courageous faith inspired his people to trust God to deliver them through the Red Sea.

Faithful Witness

Stephen was full of faith and the Holy Spirit when he was chosen to help with the church’s ministry to the widows. But his testimony for Jesus angered the Jewish authorities who decided to try him for blasphemy. But it was them who was proven guilty of blasphemy against God and His Holy presence as murderers of God’s Messiah. Their outrage leads to the martyrdom of this faithful witness, but not before his testimony sets in motion the first great persecution of the church and sets a persecutor on the road to an unexpected end.

Who Can Replace Moses?

We cover a lot of territory as we remember how Moses failed at Kadesh and was told by God that he wouldn’t be entering the Promised Land. Then we progress through Moses preparing himself, the children of Israel, Joshua, and future generations for his death. Moses finishes well. We can and should admire him. And see who finally replaces and exceeds Moses as Prophet, Priest, and King.

Do not forget

There can be so many distractions and discouragements that tempt us to subtly forget who God is. If we have hard times, we are tempted to doubt Him and His character. If we have it good, we are tempted to forget Him and keep the glory for ourselves. We give God the blame and steal the credit. But Moses warns us to not forget who we often are and remember who God always is.
(also, my memory failed and I misquoted Matthew Henry’s fourth thankful. He was thankful that he wasn’t the one who stole a wallet.)

Moses Reminds

After forty years in the wilderness, Moses gives the next generation a reminder of what was taught at Mount Sinai, renewing the covenant between the LORD and Israel. The Ten Commandments and the Greatest Commandment – the Shema. Listen and obey! Love the LORD our God. He loved us first
