Baptism Proclaims

John started baptizing people who confessed their sinful condition and desired to be made right with God (repentance). The dip in the water symbolized the washing of their sins and trust in the “One to come” who was greater than John. This greater One would baptize people in the Holy Spirit, but the physical symbol Jesus taught His apostles was to baptize people in water who had by faith been baptized into the Holy Spirit. Plus their dip under the water also symbolized their faith in the One who had died, been buried, and rose again to new life.

Kept and Sanctified

Jesus prays for His disciples. We already knew that He did. But one of the longest prayers recorded by Jesus is found in John 17. He prayed for Himself and He prays for His disciples and for those disciples that His disciples will make. He prays that the Father would “keep” them in the faith, set apart and made holy for bringing glory to God by representing Him well and making disciples.

Communion in Lord’s Supper

Paul had to correct the Corinthian believers where they were failing to discern the significance of the what he called the Lord’s Supper. It was to be a time of communion with Christ as well as with one another in unity. And we learn much about this ordinance for our day as we read this letter over their shoulders.

Pioneers in Faith

The LORD challenged Abraham and Sarah to trust Him enough to leave their home, their family, and their culture identity in order to let God start something new with them – a new home, a new family, and new cultural identity. And courageously, they followed the LORD based on His promise. We are given promises of the same vein in order to follow Christ into a new cultural identity, new family, and new home, superior to anything found on earth. Will we follow by faith?

Don’t Just Stand

We enjoyed having Jake and his family share with us their testimony of God’s faithfulness and their mission project in the other “battlefield town.”  Plus he preaches to us of the importance of Standing Firm and not falling away in challenging times.  But the Word of God calls us to more than standing, we need to be contributing to the kingdom of God.

Faithful in Humility

Barnabas and Paul get chased from one town and preach in the next town. Lystra of Lycaonia presents a new challenge for the apostles. A miraculous healing prompts the locals to think that Paul and Barnabas are the pagan gods in disguise. It’s all the apostles can do to convince the multitude that worship belongs to the Living God, Creator of heaven and earth. Their testimony of humility is eclipsed by their testimony of faithfulness as they continue to testify even after Paul is nearly murdered in Lystra.

Faithful to Obey – Ananias

Saul of Tarsus was wreaking havoc in persecuting the followers of Christ Jesus. And Jesus takes it personally. But rather than condemn and destroy this enemy, He loves Saul and rescues him from hurting himself more. And sends Ananias to show Christ’s love to this former enemy turned repentant sinner. And foretells that Jesus will turn the world upside down with this chosen vessel.

Moses Reminds

After forty years in the wilderness, Moses gives the next generation a reminder of what was taught at Mount Sinai, renewing the covenant between the LORD and Israel. The Ten Commandments and the Greatest Commandment – the Shema. Listen and obey! Love the LORD our God. He loved us first

Living the Living Word of God

I wanted to spend a few minutes sharing about a Bible study method we are using at Prairie Oaks. Plus I wanted to plug the Gideons International as the local chapter visits our congregation on Sunday. Our God is not silent. But we must choose to prioritize listening for His voice through His Word by His Spirit.

God Comes First

We start our series on the 10 Commandments. And the first commands are that God comes first, in everything. First in our allegiance, loyalty, and love – God has liberated His people to be their Protection, Provider, and Guide. And nothing else (money, person, ideology, nor state) can do what He has already done. Thus He deserves no competition for our attention.
