Don’t Just Stand

We enjoyed having Jake and his family share with us their testimony of God’s faithfulness and their mission project in the other “battlefield town.”  Plus he preaches to us of the importance of Standing Firm and not falling away in challenging times.  But the Word of God calls us to more than standing, we need to be contributing to the kingdom of God.

A Sower, Seeds, and Soils

Jesus uses stories to whet the appetite of those in the crowd who want to know more, knowing that most in the crowd are not there for the teaching. But the stories pack a lot of truth that His faithful disciples ask to understand better. So Jesus explains this parable to them so they can know how to understand other parables He used. Let’s walk through this story to see how we measure up as soil for growing a Christian.

Faithful in Humility

Barnabas and Paul get chased from one town and preach in the next town. Lystra of Lycaonia presents a new challenge for the apostles. A miraculous healing prompts the locals to think that Paul and Barnabas are the pagan gods in disguise. It’s all the apostles can do to convince the multitude that worship belongs to the Living God, Creator of heaven and earth. Their testimony of humility is eclipsed by their testimony of faithfulness as they continue to testify even after Paul is nearly murdered in Lystra.

Faithful through Persecution

Stephen was a faithful witness, even through opposition, persecution, and death.  But the seeds of the gospel that he had sown in his death did not produce immediate fruit.  Instead, a chief persecutor arose who wreaked havoc on the church, scattering them from Jerusalem.  Why would God allow this to happen to His infant church?  Instead, Jesus prepared His followers for this eventuality, knowing that what the world had done to Him, the world would do to His followers.  And He prepared His followers with great promises that His faithfulness would empower them to be faithful.

Justice and Mercy

The destruction of the nation, the capital city including the royal family, and the temple with its priesthood was the darkest moment thus far in the history of the descendants. Jeremiah saw it all happen before his eyes. Worse yet, he had faithfully warned and pleaded with the people to turn from their rebellion and turn toward God, but to no avail. Yet he endured their punishment along with them, though not a partaker in their sins. The Lamentations is his poem of grief for God’s people and to remind them that it is not yet too late to come back to God. It’s not too late to hope in God.

A Mighty Fortress For Us

Be Still. God is the only refuge worthy of trusting when all is else is going wrong. Whether natural disaster or human attacks, the LORD is Hosts is the safe place to be. He will not leave His people alone.

The Wait is Over

It is an often under-appreciated in not overlooked portion of the Christmas story, just a few days later and before the wise men arrived. Joseph and Mary take their newborn son to fulfill purification and dedication requirements from the Law. And the Holy Spirit had two faithful saints waiting for the coming of the Messiah: Simeon and Anna. And what they proclaim is important for us to know. For it can bring us joy as it brought them great joy to behold the Consolation and Redemption.

Who Can Replace Moses?

We cover a lot of territory as we remember how Moses failed at Kadesh and was told by God that he wouldn’t be entering the Promised Land. Then we progress through Moses preparing himself, the children of Israel, Joshua, and future generations for his death. Moses finishes well. We can and should admire him. And see who finally replaces and exceeds Moses as Prophet, Priest, and King.

Moses and Our Rock

Moses has faithfully led the people through forty years since the exodus from Egypt. While not a perfect man, he has a good track record. But even Moses had a bad day and let the LORD down. But the LORD has His plan and our failures cannot thwart His plan. The Rock of our salvation will provide for us. And that day has lessons for us.

Purpose in the Wilderness

The children of Israel refused to trust God and questioned His love, preferring instead to die in the wilderness than enter the promised land. So the LORD gave them death in the wilderness for the next forty years. But God had other purposes for the wilderness for the children of those generations of rebels. His mercy may not always feel like mercy, if we learn the lessons of the wilderness, we are prepared for our promised land of heaven.
