Jesus is our Sabbath

The Sabbath reminds us of the Creation Ideal. The Sabbath reminds us of our redemption. The Sabbath reminds us of the Eternal Hope. The Sabbath is fulfilled in Christ Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath. The pastor of Hebrews challenges his readers to not miss out on this opportunity to participate by faith in God’s gift of rest in Jesus Christ. There is no other rest.  Not today.  Not for eternity.

Jesus and the Sabbath

The LORD set the pattern from the beginning of creation. The LORD applied it as He gave them manna in the wilderness. Six days of usual work. Seventh day was for rest and time with God. But after generations of ignoring the Sabbath, the LORD exiled them from the promised land. When the children of Israel returned, the Pharisees educated and enforced the Sabbath rules they had made to protect the command. Jesus came and said they missed the point. The Sabbath was made for man, not vice versa.

God Comes First

We start our series on the 10 Commandments. And the first commands are that God comes first, in everything. First in our allegiance, loyalty, and love – God has liberated His people to be their Protection, Provider, and Guide. And nothing else (money, person, ideology, nor state) can do what He has already done. Thus He deserves no competition for our attention.

A Holy Nation

The LORD rescued the children of Israel from slavery and darkness. But that rescue was to bring them into relationship with the Living God. People need protection, provision, and guidance, and the LORD would provide that in order to bless them. And His blessing would include making them His own special people who would reveal Him to the nations around them as a kingdom of priests. This pattern is repeated through Christ in the new covenant. Christians are to be a peculiar people from all nations to be a holy nation and a kingdom of priests, serving God.

Men of Integrity

We revisit Exodus and the conversations between Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. Moses is overwhelmed with the responsibility of teaching and judging among the people of Israel. And his father-in-law wisely looks into the matter, asking timely questions, and perceptively counsels Moses, strengthening his relationship with God and as well letting God use others to share the load for Moses.  But they must be men of integrity.

Trail of the Tree of Life

Genesis sets the foundation for understanding the rest of the storyline of the Bible, in particular the first few chapters.   The Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil play a significant role throughout that storyline of the Scriptures, but we may not always recognize it when we see it.

Scriptures that I read or reference include… Genesis 2:7-9, 15-17; John 17:3; Genesis 3:22-24; Exodus 3:2; Deuteronomy 21:22-23; Psalm 1:1-3; Jeremiah 17:7-8; 1 Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53; Galatians 3:13; Revelation 2:7; Ezekiel 47:1-12; Revelation 22:14.
There are other Scriptures that develop these ideas, can you find others? 😉

Continue Steadfastly

Peter spoke to the crowd in Jerusalem that gathered to discover the meaning of the wind and fire. His message was that the Messiah whom they had crucified had risen from the dead (as promised by God) and now ascended to the right hand of the Father in triumph. Now was the time to repent and believe the testimony. Many chose to do just that, proclaiming their faith in the Messiah with baptism. But louder still was their changed life. Steadfastly, they continued to learn from the apostles and in fellowship with the believers. They ate together and prayed together.

Messiah in Psalms

David was a prophet in that the Spirit revealed things about David’s superlative descendant as David wrote his poetry for the Psalter.  The psalms are rich in messages about the Messiah.  Psalm 110 stands above many in the mysteries it reveals about the coming King and Priest and Judge.  We spend a few minutes unpacking the treasurers of Jesus placed within Psalm 110.

Testify of Jesus

The Jewish holiday of Pentecost celebrated the harvest that was started at Passover and Feast of Firstfruits. And the crowd at this festival heard the sound of a tornado and flames of fire followed by the praises of God in languages beyond Judea and Galilee. The followers of Jesus used the opportunity to obey His command to be witnesses to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Listen in as Peter gives the keynote message – Repent and be baptized.

The Kingdom is Here

The King of kings was born humbly, anointed by the Holy Spirit at His baptism by John, manifested with power through miracles and teaching with authority. The King defeated His enemies: sin, death, the devil, and the grave. He was unmistakably proven that He is alive to His closest followers, empowering them to be witnesses of His kingdom. That is the their new commission, testify to the resurrection authority of the King who has ascended to His throne and is coming again in like manner.
