God is Generous

Generosity to the LORD is found in knowing that God has been generous to us first and that God delights in our being generous like Him. The Lord frequently challenges His people as Paul does the Corinthians in this letter. Let’s see what God has to say about time, talents, and treasures.

We Believe

Ancient Landmark – Paul reminds the believers in Corinth that what he taught is also what he learned. What he had received, he delivered to them the same truths to believe and by which one stands in the faith. Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures. He was buried and rose from the dead the third day, according to the Scriptures. And he was seen by many credible witnesses.

Good News of Resurrection

The good news is that Jesus the Messiah died for our sins, just as was foretold in Scriptures. He was buried and then He rose from the dead, as was foretold in Scriptures. And we receive the benefit by asking and trusting that Jesus did enough to save us from all our sins. He said He did. So we can trust that He did. The resurrection proves He was right.

The Lord’s Body

The Lord’s Supper consists of bread and the cup – physical symbols of a spiritual reality. The body and the blood of Jesus broken and shed on the cross for sinners in order that they might be forgiven and made clean from guilt and shame. And to incorporate them into the church which is the body of Jesus Christ on earth today. Examine oneself to determine where you stand in this?

Unity in Love

Jesus prays that His disciples and their disciples would be unified by His Spirit in them and that unity would create a visible unity among His people through humility, love for one another (John 13:34-35), and serving one another through the Spirit. And Paul echoes that teaching in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Galatians 3:28, Ephesians 4:1-6ff, and Philippians 2:1-4. Others will see that kind of loving unity and they will know that God has been at work. And we are practicing for eternity, Jesus prays that we will be with Him forever in glory.

Communion in Lord’s Supper

Paul had to correct the Corinthian believers where they were failing to discern the significance of the what he called the Lord’s Supper. It was to be a time of communion with Christ as well as with one another in unity. And we learn much about this ordinance for our day as we read this letter over their shoulders.

Love Your Neighbor

Jesus summed up all the Law and Prophets into two commands: Love God and love your neighbor (Matt 22:35-40). And for some reason, this can be more convicting than the individual commands He gave at Sinai. And the last few months and especially the last week has revealed in town hall meetings that even Christians fail miserably with the command to love your neighbor as yourself.

Set Apart for Glory

Romans 8 has so much going on that we don’t do it justice. The glorification of the believer in Christ Jesus is so much more than we can do justice. But we examine where Romans 8 touches on our culminating gift of salvation, where we are freed from the presence of sin on the other side of death. And how all of creation eagerly anticipates that revelation.

Resurrection Hope

We have a reason for confidence and hope.  Christ has risen from the grave, it’s a historical fact.  And facts have consequences.   And when we anchor or life to facts like the resurrection, it changes how we live.  And in the midst of fear and uncertainty around s and maybe within us, the resurrection of Christ gives us a reason for confidence and hope.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8, 11

We live for Him who died for us and rose again.

Paul was so committed to Christ because he marveled over the Savior who died and rose again to save a sinner like Paul.  He challenges us as well to live in zealous gratitude to Christ who has made us new, reconciled us to the Father, and has given us a mission of bringing others to Christ.
