Set Apart for Glory

Romans 8 has so much going on that we don’t do it justice. The glorification of the believer in Christ Jesus is so much more than we can do justice. But we examine where Romans 8 touches on our culminating gift of salvation, where we are freed from the presence of sin on the other side of death. And how all of creation eagerly anticipates that revelation.

Set Apart for Sacred

Humans were created set apart from the rest of creation to be God’s handmade image-bearers who would proclaim the glory and dominion of the Creator God. But man detoured from that sacred task to seek his own glory. Yet the LORD does not leave a bad situation alone, He chooses to pursue His fallen image-bearers in order to restore them and empower them to their sacred task. That work is called sanctification. And sanctification prepares His image-bearers for eternity.

Righteousness of God

The righteousness of God, from God, by God accounted by the Judge to sinners seems inconceivable. Yet Jesus Christ accomplished that perfect righteousness for others and died on the cross so that the His own justice would be satisfied. And there is nothing we do to merit this transaction, not by ethnicity, works, or accomplishment. We simply must ask and trust that Christ Jesus did that righteousness for me.

Forgiven All Our Trespasses

In Christ, we have many benefits of our salvation, more than we may remember at one time. Paul, like the other apostles, writes to remind his original readers (and us) of all that we have in Christ. In this passage, he emphasizes that we have been forgiven all our trespasses. The record against us has been nailed to the cross of Jesus Christ. The enemy has no evidence to accuse those in Christ.

Complete in Christ

The virgin conception reported in Luke 1:30-35 sets the stage for an important doctrine for followers of Jesus – the Deity of Christ. The completeness of the Godhead resides in Him and thus we are complete in Christ. Don’t let anyone plunder you empty with vain deceptions to follow weaker things. Christ is where the fullness resides.

Having Received Christ Jesus

If you are standing still, you are losing ground. Paul challenges the believers in Colosse to not abandon their good start in Christ and to continue to build their life on the good foundation in Christ. Using metaphors from agriculture, construction, and walking, Paul admonishes them that faithfulness is not stationary nor complacent. Faithfulness is effort and action. Don’t do nothing. Walk in Christ. Build, stabilize, and abound in Christ.

Reconciled by Christ

God the Creator had made a beautiful flourishing creation, yet the human caretakers had rebelled against Him and ruined His masterpiece with death. They remained wickedly alienated from their Maker and Judge. But God was pleased to pursue reconciliation with His rebellious creatures. God was pleased to dwell fully in Christ to reconcile Himself to His humans. But He also reconciled them through regeneration to Himself and His ways. The means of reconciliation was through the cross.

Christ the Image of God

Paul writes to this church to reinforce what they had previously learned of Christ Jesus. He is the perfect Revelation of who God is because He is God in the flesh. God as Creator of all that is or ever has been or will be. Creator of the things that publicly deny Him as Creator. The fullness of God dwells in Him. And He has chosen to reveal Himself through His body, the church, flawed as she is. How shall we live with such a responsibility as this.

Walk in Will of God

Paul prays that church people in Colossae would know the will of God so that they would walk worthy, fully pleasing to Him. Then Paul proceeds to prayerfully describe what God wills for His people to be walking worthy looks like. It is to realize that we cannot, but He can through us. And to be give thanks for what the Father in Christ has already done for us.

Continue in Prayer

Paul encourages the believers in this little church of a town he never visited to pray like their lives depend on it. Like the city guard, be vigilant in praying with copious amounts of thanksgiving. Then Paul gives them two areas to be praying – pray for the missionary team and pray for themselves to be missionaries where they live to those outside the kingdom of Christ.
