Faithful to Pray

Persecution begins again for the church in Jerusalem. And this time, the first of the apostles is executed for his testimony of Jesus. And Peter is arrested and scheduled to be executed next. The church does not give up on praying to God. God answers prayers. He brought James home to be with him, a faithful witness. God delivered Peter from prison, in a way unexpected by the prayer meeting at Mary’s house. Don’t give up on praying to our Father. But trust the results to Him.

Faithful to Show Love

Saul of Tarsus started a persecution that scattered the believers from Jerusalem to parts far beyond traditional Jewish lands. God prepares the apostle Peter to reach a few Gentiles so that the church in Jerusalem is prepared to receive Gentiles without the law of Moses to unite them. Instead, it will be the law of Christ that unites His kingdom. And that is shown here through Barnabas, first to Saul then to Gentiles in Antioch.

Faithful to Obey – Ananias

Saul of Tarsus was wreaking havoc in persecuting the followers of Christ Jesus. And Jesus takes it personally. But rather than condemn and destroy this enemy, He loves Saul and rescues him from hurting himself more. And sends Ananias to show Christ’s love to this former enemy turned repentant sinner. And foretells that Jesus will turn the world upside down with this chosen vessel.

The Virtuous Life

I’m not an expert on being a mother, but I’ve had a good one for long time. Let’s visit on one description of a good mother from Scripture and realize we all have a lot to learn from this.  The virtuous life is only possible in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

Faithful through Persecution

Stephen was a faithful witness, even through opposition, persecution, and death.  But the seeds of the gospel that he had sown in his death did not produce immediate fruit.  Instead, a chief persecutor arose who wreaked havoc on the church, scattering them from Jerusalem.  Why would God allow this to happen to His infant church?  Instead, Jesus prepared His followers for this eventuality, knowing that what the world had done to Him, the world would do to His followers.  And He prepared His followers with great promises that His faithfulness would empower them to be faithful.

Faithful Witness

Stephen was full of faith and the Holy Spirit when he was chosen to help with the church’s ministry to the widows. But his testimony for Jesus angered the Jewish authorities who decided to try him for blasphemy. But it was them who was proven guilty of blasphemy against God and His Holy presence as murderers of God’s Messiah. Their outrage leads to the martyrdom of this faithful witness, but not before his testimony sets in motion the first great persecution of the church and sets a persecutor on the road to an unexpected end.

Christ is Living

Jesus Christ is the Living One who became dead and, behold, is the Living One for all eons of time.  As the Lamb who was slain and who lives and reigns, these are His credentials for being Judge of all humanity.  We ponder at Easter that the resurrection is an essential part of our salvation, but it is also critical part of the Son of Man’s earning the role as Judge of all the earth.  He invites us to get to know Him as Savior before we stand before Him as our Judge.

Pentecost Communion

Jesus promised that His people would be empowered to be His witnesses in word and action.  The Holy Spirit began to answer that promise on the Day of Pentecost, fifty days after the Resurrection.  Peter uses the occasion to proclaim Christ, crucified and risen, and forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus’s name.  That reconciliation brings about fellowship both between God and humanity and among people.

Calendar of God

Jesus is our Passover Lamb who saves us from the judgment of God (Leviticus 23:4-8).
And His sinless death makes us unleavened bread in God’s eyes, so we should purge from ourselves corruption and puffed-up pride (1 Corinthians 5:20-26).
But Christ didn’t stay dead, He rose from the grave, being the Firstfruit of the resurrection with more resurrections to come (Leviticus 23:9-14 and 1 Corinthians 15:20-26).
Then Fifty days later, Pentecost celebrates the wheat harvest with firstfruit offering, just as the gift of the Spirit is the firstfruit of our salvation (Romans 8:23) and the start of the great harvest (Acts 2:41).
What’s next on the calendar?
The blowing of trumpets (Leviticus 23:23-25 and 1 Corinthians 15:52-52)

Mission of God

Jesus accomplished His mission objectives of making disciples, defeating the enemies of sin, devil, and death, as well as preparing His followers to continue to kingdom work. They were to not worry about times and events, but to testify of the risen King and make disciples, starting in Jerusalem and expanding from there. The Book of Acts is about the Holy Spirit empowering them to expand His kingdom. Let’s go!
