Do you know what you are sowing?

We are sowing our money, time, and energy into something constantly. And we will reap what we sow those resources into. How much of it will be of eternal worth? And how much of it will be regrettable later? We need to think about investing some of our money, time, and energy into things that are everlasting – God and souls.

Faithful with Grace to Save

The Messiah is Jewish. Do His Gentile followers need to become Jewish or is He Jewish enough for them too? The question vexed some of the early believers who could only imagine God working through the old covenants given to Abraham and Moses. But some insisted that the new covenant in Christ’s death and resurrection replaced the old covenants. How would the dispute be settled? They saw what God was doing among the Gentiles coincided with what God said He would do in the Law and Prophets. He would be faithful with grace to forgive any and everyone who trusts Him to save.

Faithful to Show Love

Saul of Tarsus started a persecution that scattered the believers from Jerusalem to parts far beyond traditional Jewish lands. God prepares the apostle Peter to reach a few Gentiles so that the church in Jerusalem is prepared to receive Gentiles without the law of Moses to unite them. Instead, it will be the law of Christ that unites His kingdom. And that is shown here through Barnabas, first to Saul then to Gentiles in Antioch.

Faithful to Obey – Ananias

Saul of Tarsus was wreaking havoc in persecuting the followers of Christ Jesus. And Jesus takes it personally. But rather than condemn and destroy this enemy, He loves Saul and rescues him from hurting himself more. And sends Ananias to show Christ’s love to this former enemy turned repentant sinner. And foretells that Jesus will turn the world upside down with this chosen vessel.

Faithful through Persecution

Stephen was a faithful witness, even through opposition, persecution, and death.  But the seeds of the gospel that he had sown in his death did not produce immediate fruit.  Instead, a chief persecutor arose who wreaked havoc on the church, scattering them from Jerusalem.  Why would God allow this to happen to His infant church?  Instead, Jesus prepared His followers for this eventuality, knowing that what the world had done to Him, the world would do to His followers.  And He prepared His followers with great promises that His faithfulness would empower them to be faithful.

Pentecost Communion

Jesus promised that His people would be empowered to be His witnesses in word and action.  The Holy Spirit began to answer that promise on the Day of Pentecost, fifty days after the Resurrection.  Peter uses the occasion to proclaim Christ, crucified and risen, and forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus’s name.  That reconciliation brings about fellowship both between God and humanity and among people.

Love Your Neighbor

Jesus summed up all the Law and Prophets into two commands: Love God and love your neighbor (Matt 22:35-40). And for some reason, this can be more convicting than the individual commands He gave at Sinai. And the last few months and especially the last week has revealed in town hall meetings that even Christians fail miserably with the command to love your neighbor as yourself.

Men of Integrity

We revisit Exodus and the conversations between Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. Moses is overwhelmed with the responsibility of teaching and judging among the people of Israel. And his father-in-law wisely looks into the matter, asking timely questions, and perceptively counsels Moses, strengthening his relationship with God and as well letting God use others to share the load for Moses.  But they must be men of integrity.

Continue Steadfastly

Peter spoke to the crowd in Jerusalem that gathered to discover the meaning of the wind and fire. His message was that the Messiah whom they had crucified had risen from the dead (as promised by God) and now ascended to the right hand of the Father in triumph. Now was the time to repent and believe the testimony. Many chose to do just that, proclaiming their faith in the Messiah with baptism. But louder still was their changed life. Steadfastly, they continued to learn from the apostles and in fellowship with the believers. They ate together and prayed together.

Testify of Jesus

The Jewish holiday of Pentecost celebrated the harvest that was started at Passover and Feast of Firstfruits. And the crowd at this festival heard the sound of a tornado and flames of fire followed by the praises of God in languages beyond Judea and Galilee. The followers of Jesus used the opportunity to obey His command to be witnesses to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Listen in as Peter gives the keynote message – Repent and be baptized.
