Repent for More

The children of Israel had broken the covenant of love and broken the heart of God with their traitorous turn with the golden calf. Moses had successfully pleaded with God to turn away His wrath. But the people would need to turn from their sinful attitude if they wanted God to still be in their presence. That turning is called “repentance.” And it’s kind of a big deal.  But it is the path to a closer vision of God.

An Idol or the Intercessor

It is ironic but hopefully no surprise that the very stories designed to warn us against making idols are often most likely to tempt us modern people to make idols. Why? Because they reveal God to not be what we expect God to be. Thus we want to think of our God to be more like we prefer Him to be, rather than what He reveals. I hope that a second look at this Spirit-inspired story will help us see the warning and more important, see the the LORD for who He really is.

Practicing the Preaching

First a review of the Ten Commands. Have you got them memorized by now? But knowing them by heart is only the first step. You won’t do what you don’t know. The big step is being one who does the commands. And because we fall short, thankfully Christ practiced them perfectly.

Jesus and the Sabbath

The LORD set the pattern from the beginning of creation. The LORD applied it as He gave them manna in the wilderness. Six days of usual work. Seventh day was for rest and time with God. But after generations of ignoring the Sabbath, the LORD exiled them from the promised land. When the children of Israel returned, the Pharisees educated and enforced the Sabbath rules they had made to protect the command. Jesus came and said they missed the point. The Sabbath was made for man, not vice versa.

God Comes First

We start our series on the 10 Commandments. And the first commands are that God comes first, in everything. First in our allegiance, loyalty, and love – God has liberated His people to be their Protection, Provider, and Guide. And nothing else (money, person, ideology, nor state) can do what He has already done. Thus He deserves no competition for our attention.

A Holy Nation

The LORD rescued the children of Israel from slavery and darkness. But that rescue was to bring them into relationship with the Living God. People need protection, provision, and guidance, and the LORD would provide that in order to bless them. And His blessing would include making them His own special people who would reveal Him to the nations around them as a kingdom of priests. This pattern is repeated through Christ in the new covenant. Christians are to be a peculiar people from all nations to be a holy nation and a kingdom of priests, serving God.

Men of Integrity

We revisit Exodus and the conversations between Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. Moses is overwhelmed with the responsibility of teaching and judging among the people of Israel. And his father-in-law wisely looks into the matter, asking timely questions, and perceptively counsels Moses, strengthening his relationship with God and as well letting God use others to share the load for Moses.  But they must be men of integrity.

One Generation to the Next

We get a peek behind the curtain of the tent into the family of Moses. His father-in-law is the priest of the tribe of Midian who worships the LORD. But the stories from his son-in-law Moses cause the old priest to worship and exclaim that his faith in the one true God is greater now than ever before. And we learn something about honoring our parents and evangelizing with our story of God.

The Lord of our Fight

There is more going on than a battlefield report from the history of Exodus. The LORD brings our attention to this one to remind His people that these things are physical symbols of spiritual realities.  And the enemy we face is not people, but spiritual forces much more dangerous than swords and guns.  Ephesians 6 reminds us to be ready for spiritual warfare or we will be live defeated lives.  But in Christ, we are more than conquerors.

Water from the Rock

The LORD is remarkably patient with His new nation of Israelites. Although they have not done well with the previous exams, the third exam asks about if they will heed their thirst or trust. He patient, even though, once again, they choose contention instead of contentment. It is a test they will face again in the wilderness (Numbers 20). And it is one we face more than we realize. Will we choose to hallow His name with honor or will we defame His grace with doubt?
