Baptism teaches

Peter proclaimed that the mysterious gift of the Holy Spirit was through Jesus the Messiah, crucified and risen. But those people could change their mind and ask God for mercy. The physical symbol of their repentance and faith in Jesus would be baptism. And Peter alludes to three things that baptism symbolizes – a physical symbol of a spiritual reality.

Compel Them

We had the pleasure of Stuart Estes and his family come and share a report from the Association of Baptist Students at the University of Arkansas.  He finished with this challenge from Jesus as recorded in Luke’s gospel.  We cannot be complacent at the Great Commission of Jesus.  Compel the lost to come to Jesus for the feast of mercy and grace.

Mind of Christ

The apostle had challenged the believers to think and live with humility.  He reminds them that Jesus is our perfect example of humility for the Son of God set aside the advantages of His Deity in order to live as one of us.  And not only did He live as one of us, He submitted to the Father’s will and died in our place the excruciating death of the cross.  Thus, the Father has highly exalted Him by raising Him from the dead and elevating Him to His right hand.  We can trust that God will reward those who follow the footsteps of Jesus in faith.

We Abide

Ancient Landmarks – Come to think of it, all of Scripture is a reliable navigation tool for the journey of life. A solid foundation upon which to build one’s life and for discerning this world’s complexities. How can it be so? God breathed out its very words, guiding the prophets of old as they penned its words. The Spirit preserved His work through time to be available to us as faithful men and women passed it along, translating it, and teaching it to the next generation.

We Believe

Ancient Landmark – Paul reminds the believers in Corinth that what he taught is also what he learned. What he had received, he delivered to them the same truths to believe and by which one stands in the faith. Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures. He was buried and rose from the dead the third day, according to the Scriptures. And he was seen by many credible witnesses.

Great Commission

Ancient Landmark – the Great Commission Jesus commands His disciples to continue to go and make more disciples of the Kingdom of God. The authority belongs to Jesus and the good news is that He welcomes people from all nations to follow Him in His kingdom of heaven. And we have the privilege and empowerment to teach others to join the movement.

Lord’s Model Prayer

An Ancient Landmark that has been recited and meditated upon for generations of Christ-followers. Jesus taught His disciples a short model prayer that they could direct and inform their prayers to their heavenly Father.

Ten Commands – Part 2

The LORD spoke from the mountain these ten commands of His covenant with Israel but they have been taught much longer and wider than there. Jesus expounded them in His gospel of the kingdom (Sermon on the Mount). The apostles taught them and applied them to new Christians regardless of their ethnicity and culture. These are the timeless guidelines for honoring God by honoring His image in humanity.

Baptism Proclaims

John started baptizing people who confessed their sinful condition and desired to be made right with God (repentance). The dip in the water symbolized the washing of their sins and trust in the “One to come” who was greater than John. This greater One would baptize people in the Holy Spirit, but the physical symbol Jesus taught His apostles was to baptize people in water who had by faith been baptized into the Holy Spirit. Plus their dip under the water also symbolized their faith in the One who had died, been buried, and rose again to new life.

Kept and Sanctified

Jesus prays for His disciples. We already knew that He did. But one of the longest prayers recorded by Jesus is found in John 17. He prayed for Himself and He prays for His disciples and for those disciples that His disciples will make. He prays that the Father would “keep” them in the faith, set apart and made holy for bringing glory to God by representing Him well and making disciples.
