Faithful through Persecution

Stephen was a faithful witness, even through opposition, persecution, and death.  But the seeds of the gospel that he had sown in his death did not produce immediate fruit.  Instead, a chief persecutor arose who wreaked havoc on the church, scattering them from Jerusalem.  Why would God allow this to happen to His infant church?  Instead, Jesus prepared His followers for this eventuality, knowing that what the world had done to Him, the world would do to His followers.  And He prepared His followers with great promises that His faithfulness would empower them to be faithful.

Pentecost Communion

Jesus promised that His people would be empowered to be His witnesses in word and action.  The Holy Spirit began to answer that promise on the Day of Pentecost, fifty days after the Resurrection.  Peter uses the occasion to proclaim Christ, crucified and risen, and forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus’s name.  That reconciliation brings about fellowship both between God and humanity and among people.

Love Your Neighbor

Jesus summed up all the Law and Prophets into two commands: Love God and love your neighbor (Matt 22:35-40). And for some reason, this can be more convicting than the individual commands He gave at Sinai. And the last few months and especially the last week has revealed in town hall meetings that even Christians fail miserably with the command to love your neighbor as yourself.

Men of Integrity

We revisit Exodus and the conversations between Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. Moses is overwhelmed with the responsibility of teaching and judging among the people of Israel. And his father-in-law wisely looks into the matter, asking timely questions, and perceptively counsels Moses, strengthening his relationship with God and as well letting God use others to share the load for Moses.  But they must be men of integrity.

Continue Steadfastly

Peter spoke to the crowd in Jerusalem that gathered to discover the meaning of the wind and fire. His message was that the Messiah whom they had crucified had risen from the dead (as promised by God) and now ascended to the right hand of the Father in triumph. Now was the time to repent and believe the testimony. Many chose to do just that, proclaiming their faith in the Messiah with baptism. But louder still was their changed life. Steadfastly, they continued to learn from the apostles and in fellowship with the believers. They ate together and prayed together.

Testify of Jesus

The Jewish holiday of Pentecost celebrated the harvest that was started at Passover and Feast of Firstfruits. And the crowd at this festival heard the sound of a tornado and flames of fire followed by the praises of God in languages beyond Judea and Galilee. The followers of Jesus used the opportunity to obey His command to be witnesses to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Listen in as Peter gives the keynote message – Repent and be baptized.

Hallmarks of True Church

We had a special guest from the Association of Baptist Students, our college ministry at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Stuart Estes is the new Ministry Team Leader at The Hedge at ABS. You will hear an introduction about him as well as news from this important missionary endeavour. Then he preached the Word of God to us from the book of Acts on the hallmarks or distinctions of a true church.  Plus a nice surprise on the end of the audio.

Blessed in Christ

While the pastor was off, we had a technical malfunction and did not record our guest speaker.  Our apologies, Bro. Allen.  But the last time the preacher was gone back in August, Bro. Gabe Harris came and preached the word for us at Prairie Oaks, twice in one day.  We posted the morning message back then.  This week we are including Gabe’s verse-by-verse exposition from Ephesians 1 that he preached to our evening congregation.

Ephesians 1 is a powerful passage of Scripture that we do well to ponder upon often as Paul condenses what Christ accomplished for each of us who are in Christ.  And Gabe does a great job of revealing the glory that Paul packed into this letter.

Christ is Faithful

Our series in Revelation comes to its conclusion this week.  But we discover that last message is a very sobering reminder that we as individuals as well as churches can get far away from what we were created to be.  Yet even in the midst of correction from the Faithful and True Witness, Christ is Faithful to His wayward saints in love and righteousness.  He invites and even disciplines us back into fellowship with Him.  Jesus is the good news.
This is the last in a seven-part sermon series on church revitalization.

I added a short intro before the audio of the sermon audio begins.   Let me know in the comments what you think.

Christ opens the door…

Ever feel like that there are so many obstacles and closed doors slammed in your face?  What is one to do?  The little church in Philadelphia was feeling weak and excluded.  But Christ reminded them that He had opened the most important door unto them, the one into heaven!  And they would enter that door victorious as they remained faithful in spite of their weakness.  In weakness is where the Lord’s strength is glorified.
This is the sixth in a seven-part sermon series on church revitalization.

I also included a testimony that the audio is difficult to hear (just a minute or so into the message) but if you can hear it, it’s a blessing.
