Rule of the Spirit

Paul gives a personal glimpse of the struggles he felt between his old way of living (the rule of sin) and his new life in Christ (rule of Spirit). There were daily defeats but the war is already won in Christ. And so it is with us who are in Christ.

Prince of Peace is Lord

If we have peace with God from being reconciled through Christ, we can experience the peace of God from living in the Spirit of God. With the Spirit of God within us, we can experience peace within the body of Christ. No longer just peacekeepers, but we are to be peace-makers – loving one another in concrete ways of grace, mercy, forgiveness, submission, and honor. It radically changes how we live and how we selflessly interact with the world today in light of our eternal home in Christ.

Greater than Moses

Moses is kinda a big deal. God Himself called Moses a faithful servant and called him a friend that God spoke to face to face. When everyone else shrank away in fear, Moses answered the call of God to come into the fire to come closer to God. Could anyone ever measure up to being a prophet like Moses? God said there would be. Only the Messiah Himself could measure up and exceed the standard set by Moses. Let’s see a few ways that’s possible.

Living Transformed

Living Transformed

The Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul gives impossible commands that are beyond what is humanly possible for us fallen creatures to obey.  But God doesn’t just command the impossible.  He gives us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us and to transform us more into the image of the perfect Man, Jesus Christ.  Thus this teaching begins with instructions to be filled with the Spirit to walk in obedience with Him.  Then our lives will be different and the hope of the gospel will be revealed.

Our missionary to the University of Arkansas campus, Stuart Estes, was with us today to share about our college ministry and preach the Word of God to us.

Fruit of Holy Spirit

In contrast to the works of the sinful fleshly nature, abiding in Christ through walking in the Spirit produces fruit that is consistent with God’s character and modeled by Christ. We choose whether to crucify the old nature and walk in the Spirit, but it is the Holy Spirit that produces the fruit.

Liberty to Love

The apostle Paul has concluded his defense of the gospel. Christ has set us free from the regulations of the Law from Sinai. He does not want the Galatian believers putting themselves under bondage to those laws at the expense of grace. Yet he also does not want them using their liberty to indulge sinful desires either. Rather, this liberty is given so that we may be like Christ and love others. Love fulfills the law of Christ.

Faithful with Grace to Save

The Messiah is Jewish. Do His Gentile followers need to become Jewish or is He Jewish enough for them too? The question vexed some of the early believers who could only imagine God working through the old covenants given to Abraham and Moses. But some insisted that the new covenant in Christ’s death and resurrection replaced the old covenants. How would the dispute be settled? They saw what God was doing among the Gentiles coincided with what God said He would do in the Law and Prophets. He would be faithful with grace to forgive any and everyone who trusts Him to save.

Faithful to Show Love

Saul of Tarsus started a persecution that scattered the believers from Jerusalem to parts far beyond traditional Jewish lands. God prepares the apostle Peter to reach a few Gentiles so that the church in Jerusalem is prepared to receive Gentiles without the law of Moses to unite them. Instead, it will be the law of Christ that unites His kingdom. And that is shown here through Barnabas, first to Saul then to Gentiles in Antioch.

Faithful through Persecution

Stephen was a faithful witness, even through opposition, persecution, and death.  But the seeds of the gospel that he had sown in his death did not produce immediate fruit.  Instead, a chief persecutor arose who wreaked havoc on the church, scattering them from Jerusalem.  Why would God allow this to happen to His infant church?  Instead, Jesus prepared His followers for this eventuality, knowing that what the world had done to Him, the world would do to His followers.  And He prepared His followers with great promises that His faithfulness would empower them to be faithful.

Faithful Witness

Stephen was full of faith and the Holy Spirit when he was chosen to help with the church’s ministry to the widows. But his testimony for Jesus angered the Jewish authorities who decided to try him for blasphemy. But it was them who was proven guilty of blasphemy against God and His Holy presence as murderers of God’s Messiah. Their outrage leads to the martyrdom of this faithful witness, but not before his testimony sets in motion the first great persecution of the church and sets a persecutor on the road to an unexpected end.
