Importance of Weakness

We all face times when the world seems out of control and a dangerous place.  For many of us, the last couple months have seemed such a time.  But in those positions of weakness, as much as we hate them, embracing that weakness gives us opportunity to know God in a more intimate way.  Only then can we know as the psalmist that the LORD is our refuge and our strength.

Tying up loose ends

John wrote his gospel account after the other three and added details pertinent to His purpose – “that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).  But then he added an epilogue to tie up some loose ends from his narrative.  And it turns out that Peter is not the only loose end, so are we.

Know the LORD now

Do you have some extra time on your hands or busier than ever?  Either way, now is the time to make this a priority.  Whatever else we may think is important, this should be at the top of the list.  Everything else is temporary.  Our relationship with the LORD should be our boast and joy.  Let’s keep making time for Him no matter what else is going on.

Jesus Growing Up

We don’t know many details, and it staggers the imagination.  Jesus was a baby, a toddler, a child, an adolescent, and young adult all before He was publicly revealed again to be the Messiah on the banks of the Jordan River.  And that growing up was vital part of being our Savior, fulfilling righteousness for us leading up to be our sinless Sacrifice.  But this little glimpse into His boyhood has much to teach us.

Jesus grew up.  We should continue to grow up as well.

Luke 2:39-52

The Foundation is Christ

The writer of Hebrews reminds the readers that we don’t accidentally grow, we have to pursue maturity.   But in growing, we don’t leave what we learned first.  Instead we build on that foundation, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone.  Here we are given six elements of that foundation that the writer wants them (and us) to build upon.  And we see how Christ is the one who holds it all together as we pursue maturity.

Growing toward Maturity

God accepts us and loves us just as we are.  Yet He loves us too much to leave us that way, as spiritual infants.  The Father desires us to grow toward maturity, closer to the image of His Son, perfect humanity.  Yet the writer of Hebrews reminds the readers that we don’t accidentally grow, we have to pursue maturity.   This is the first in a multi-part sermon series on spiritual growth and perseverance

Love the Lord who loved you first

The world can mean different things depending on how it is being used by the writer.  But John and the other apostles saw a “worldly” lifestyle that was inherently ungodly as it ignored God and eternity in order to live for today only.  Jesus had warned them against the dangerous myopia of forgetting what is infinitely important in order to play at what is temporarily in fashion.
Love the Lord who loved you and died in your place even before you knew or loved Him.

When we feel like giving up.

Elijah was a man who had the same weaknesses as we all do, yet he was also a man of faith used by God in miraculous ways.  But we pause today to examine his humanity so that we might find hope and encouragement from the grace shown him in his time of weakness.

Fellowship through Forgiveness

John had walked and talked with Jesus for many years, both physically and spiritually after the ascension.  So he knew something about fellowship with the Living God.  And although John was an apostle, he also had experienced how sin troubles the fellowship between people and the Holy God.  So John points us to experience the grace of God.

What Does God Require of us?

Moses was about to exit stage left and among his parting words to the children of Israel were these thoughts of what God really wanted from His chosen people.  The LORD has the authority to make expectations and hold us accountable for them.  How do we measure up to what God wants from us?  What can we do about it?
