Water from the Rock

The LORD is remarkably patient with His new nation of Israelites. Although they have not done well with the previous exams, the third exam asks about if they will heed their thirst or trust. He patient, even though, once again, they choose contention instead of contentment. It is a test they will face again in the wilderness (Numbers 20). And it is one we face more than we realize. Will we choose to hallow His name with honor or will we defame His grace with doubt?

Bread of Life

Within a month of their miraculous deliverance from Egypt followed by the Red Sea crossing, the children of Israel are having second thoughts on having left their slavery. Their food ran out. But the LORD allowed them to hunger in order to test them and feed them in His own miraculous way. But the manna from heaven was only a physical symbol of a spiritual reality that we all need to learn. Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from God.

Bitterness Healed

headline

Bitterness or Blessing. Will we have the faith to turn from our fear and seek God’s provision. The LORD will lead us often times through the wilderness badlands in order that we won’t be distracted from our relationship with Him. But as we see in our story today, God is leading us to places of refreshment if we will follow Him.

The Showdown Begins

Moses and Aaron will represent the LORD in His plan to make the Egyptians know that the LORD is God, even in Egypt. And Pharaoh’s stubborn resistance will cooperate in giving God Almighty more opportunity to show Himself stronger than all the gods of Egypt, including Pharaoh himself.

Moses Shares Good News

Moses is recruited by God Almighty for the deliverance of the children of Israel. First recruit by Moses is his brother Aaron and together they mobilize the elders of Israel to believe that the LORD is about to rescue them. But their first encounter with Pharaoh leaves much to be desired. In fact, the king of Egypt has made things worse for the nation of slaves, just as the LORD had forewarned would happen. But God is neither surprised nor hampered by the rebellion of men.

Set Apart for Glory

Romans 8 has so much going on that we don’t do it justice. The glorification of the believer in Christ Jesus is so much more than we can do justice. But we examine where Romans 8 touches on our culminating gift of salvation, where we are freed from the presence of sin on the other side of death. And how all of creation eagerly anticipates that revelation.

Wise to ask for wisdom

Wisdom series applied.  Our wisdom series moves from David to Solomon, the man famous for wisdom.
Arguably, the smartest thing Solomon ever did was ask for wisdom. So we will spend a few minutes seeing what attitudes and thoughts led up to Solomon’s famous request for wisdom from God that changed his world.

Looking unto Jesus

As both our example of faith and the object of our faith, Jesus stands as the climax of Hebrews 11 and its list of heroes. Thus let us run the course set before us with endurance. There are hindrances to be set aside. There will be hostility from opposition. But looking unto Jesus, we see Him on the other side of those sacrifices and seated at the right hand of God. Let’s Go!

By faith, they persevered.

The writer of Hebrews is giving us an avalanche of examples of commendable faith in the build up to grand finale. We need to see three big lessons from all these examples. One, for all of us, faith is occasionally mixed with failure. Do not let failure define your faith, but trust in God to redeem the failure. Two, faith sometimes brings victory on earth. Other times, faith shows the value of heaven when victory is harder to find. And three, we have greater opportunity to be heroes of faith in the new covenant than these Old Testament examples did.

Generations with God

The focus in previous section was on Abraham and Sarah being on journey of faith in life. This section focuses on their passing the faith to next generation before dying. Death was not what mattered. Being faithful through death is what mattered. Believing in the resurrection is what mattered. And preparing the next generation of faith is what mattered.
