The Righteousness of God

The poetry of the Psalms can be hard for non-Hebrew readers to understand at times. But the middle section of Psalm 36 crosses the language barrier, even if not all the words do. The covenant love and righteousness of the LORD is extolled in superlatives to remind us why we should trust our lives and joys to His capable hands even when we don’t understand His decisions.

Jesus is our Sabbath

The Sabbath reminds us of the Creation Ideal. The Sabbath reminds us of our redemption. The Sabbath reminds us of the Eternal Hope. The Sabbath is fulfilled in Christ Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath. The pastor of Hebrews challenges his readers to not miss out on this opportunity to participate by faith in God’s gift of rest in Jesus Christ. There is no other rest.  Not today.  Not for eternity.

Water from the Rock

The LORD is remarkably patient with His new nation of Israelites. Although they have not done well with the previous exams, the third exam asks about if they will heed their thirst or trust. He patient, even though, once again, they choose contention instead of contentment. It is a test they will face again in the wilderness (Numbers 20). And it is one we face more than we realize. Will we choose to hallow His name with honor or will we defame His grace with doubt?

Bread of Life

Within a month of their miraculous deliverance from Egypt followed by the Red Sea crossing, the children of Israel are having second thoughts on having left their slavery. Their food ran out. But the LORD allowed them to hunger in order to test them and feed them in His own miraculous way. But the manna from heaven was only a physical symbol of a spiritual reality that we all need to learn. Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from God.

Red Sea Resurrection

The LORD sets a trap, and Israel is the bait. God knows that Pharaoh has still not learned his lesson and already regrets his decision to let the Israelites leave. Pharaoh will send his army and chariots against God’s people to kill them or push them into a watery grave in the Red Sea. But the LORD has other plans. He parts the waters to make a dry path for His people to cross, luring the Egyptians to follow to their own destruction. the morning light showed that God’s servant had brought His people through death and grave to new life on the other side, a resurrection indeed!

The Blessing of God

The LORD singled out Abraham and Sarah to leave their home and come be a part of God’s great plan to bless all the nations. This was perhaps more radical than we imagine with greater reward than we grasp. And they packed up and obeyed, joining God in a story that basically takes the reader through the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures and through the entirety of the New Testament.  And they gained the blessing of God, which is relationship with God Himself.  Let’s go too!

Trust God’s Way

What bears the weight of your life? Where are you leaning your life? Jesus said the wise man placed the burden of his life on Jesus’s teachings. Solomon wisely agrees in Proverbs 3. Lean not on your own understandings but to trust in the LORD with all your heart.

By faith, they persevered.

The writer of Hebrews is giving us an avalanche of examples of commendable faith in the build up to grand finale. We need to see three big lessons from all these examples. One, for all of us, faith is occasionally mixed with failure. Do not let failure define your faith, but trust in God to redeem the failure. Two, faith sometimes brings victory on earth. Other times, faith shows the value of heaven when victory is harder to find. And three, we have greater opportunity to be heroes of faith in the new covenant than these Old Testament examples did.

Rahab and Joshua

Rahab teaches us as much about Jesus as Joshua does.  She enters the story with a sordid reputation that tarnishes nearly everyone who associates with her. Yet she is crucial to knowing God and the work that the LORD was doing with the Israelites and Canaanites. So much so that the New Testament reveals more about her and through her than the Hebrew Scriptures do.  We are all more like Rahab than we may realize.
Sinners saved by grace.

Moses traded up

It boggles the mind how Moses willingly traded the power, prestige, pleasure and treasure of Pharaoh’s household in order to identify with slaves. Yet with a hope that could not be realized in this life or even in this world, Moses by faith counted the cost and saw the gain in following Christ. How about you? Following Christ may cost you less than Moses forsook, but it’s still hard to let it go sometimes. But what holds us back is garbage compared to what is offered before us in Christ. Let’s endure together.
