Wages or Gift

Paul uses an analogy that he says is imperfect but still communicates an essential lesson for us. We have been set free from sin as a slave-master whose wages are corruption, shame, and death. Now that we belong to Christ, why would someone want to still want to work a second job for sin? Sin still pays corruption, shame, and death. Instead, we should work wholehearted for Christ who doesn’t just give us wages but He gifts us right-living, holiness, and eternal life.

Know your Shepherd

For a few minutes, we look at what is hopefully a very familiar passage of Scripture – Psalm 23.  The hope is that each of us growing increasingly familiar with not only Psalm 23 but also with the LORD, the Shepherd of Psalm 23.  Then when the trying times comes, we already have depth with the One who cares for our souls.

Sin Shall Not Reign

We resume our study through Paul’s letter to the Roman church with a challenge – who reigns over your life? Who is the Master that we obey? It is one thing to say Jesus is Lord, but do our words and actions reflect that? We are to surrender every part of our body to His way of life or we reveal that sin reigns there instead.

Story of Easter

Resurrection weekend. Popularly known as Easter. As foretold through Isaiah and by Jesus Himself, His Passover weekend with the disciples is interrupted with His arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial. But the first day of the week changed everything. “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!”

Baptism Proclaims

Paul uses baptism to illustrate why we should be denying temptations to sin and living more like Christ. Which prompts us to examine baptism as Paul did in order to better understand the spiritual significance of this ordinance given by Christ the Lord.

Loved His Enemies

God demonstrated His love for us even while we were still ungodly, enemy sinners, Christ died for us to reconcile us back to our Creator and Judge, saving us from the wrath to come.

Admittance to Grace

Having been justified by faith in Jesus Christ, we have received peace with God, access to His presence, and confident hope that is greater than any circumstances. In fact, our troubles can work to increase our confident expectation through His Holy Spirit at work in us.

Faith works

Paul preaches that we are saved by faith and not by works. James preaches that your faith should be accompanied by works or it’s not faith. And both point to Abraham as proof. Who is right? The Holy Spirit of course! Jesus is always right.

Imputed Righteousness

Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Lots of ways to translate that one word – imputed, reckoned, counted, credited, and accounted. But we don’t have righteousness without Christ, but by grace through faith in Jesus we can be credited His righteousness. And that makes all the difference.

The Justice of God

Justice is a core value of who God is. It is deplorable to Him when injustice takes place – both the punishment of good and the promotion of wickedness. Yet last week we saw that none of us are good. We all have sinned and enjoyed it, guilty before a righteous God. Thankfully mercy is also a core value. God the Father and God the Son orchestrated a plan before time in order to remain righteous and just while also rescuing sinful humans from sin in order to give them righteousness.
